ABOUT

TRANSFORMING FAMILIES

Getting your family to understand your gender identity can be a long, complicated, and stressful process. Many families feel overwhelmed or alone while trying to support their questioning or transgender child.

Transforming Families is a community where transgender, gender non-conforming, and questioning youth and their families come together to support each other in a safe, welcoming space. At our monthly gatherings, separate breakout groups for parents, kids, siblings, and teens provide the opportunity to meet and learn from other people traveling the same path.

The people who come to our support groups have a very specific journey in common, but we all come from very different walks of life. We agree on what’s most important: that our kids are safe and healthy and loved.

Families meet other families to share, talk, and hang out. We're here to listen to each other's stories, advocate for each other, exchange resources, build community, and have fun!

It's a simple idea that works.

WHO we are

Transforming Families Minnesota is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to helping transgender (including non-binary, questioning, intersex, and other identities) youth and their support networks. We pride ourselves on being a peer-led organization, and almost everyone who works or volunteers with TFF is part of the trans community or a parent/caregiver of a trans person. WHAT we do

Our mission is to create a better world for trans youth and their families, starting right here in Minnesota. The cornerstone of our work are our monthly in-person and virtual support groups for trans youth and their families throughout Minnesota. We also support our families by advocating for trans rights and protections, collaborating with other organizations, and other efforts such as fundraising and tabling at pride festivals throughout the state. WHERE we work

The work we do is centered in Minnesota, but we welcome families from neighboring communities to attend our meetings if we are the closest source of support for you. Although most of our meetings and families are in the Twin Cities Metro, we have a growing number of support groups in Greater Minnesota as well as a monthly virtual meeting and a private Facebook group for our families statewide to support each other.

WHEN we meet

All support groups meet monthly at the same time and place, but we encourage our community to reach out for help whenever they need it. We also maintain a presence at local pride festivals and other events throughout the year. Our private Facebook group is a great way to access peer support at any time. If you need help or have a question about how to attend a meeting or join our private Facebook group, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

WHY we do it

When a family member comes out as transgender, even the most accepting families can need support navigating the resulting changes to their family dynamic. Providing a safe and welcoming space for the entire family helps gives trans youth AND their families the support and tools they need to thrive, especially in the current sociopolitical climate.
